Abstract:
To overcome the difficulties in identifying lithology of fine cuttings, a method was developed to identify lithology while drilling by using element content and spectrum determined by X-ray fluorescence ( XRF) and logging data. The results show that the element content correlates to mineral content of cuttings, and element contents of Si, A1 and Fe correlate to GR logging curve. XRF data can be utilized to calculate shaliness of cuttings and determine the lithology of sandy mudstone formation. XRF spectrogram of the same lithology has some similarity, which can be used for lithology identification. The field data show that such a comprehensive method can improve the accuracy of lithology identification.
