Electrochemical synthesis and characterization of novel multielectrochromic copolymer

Abstract:
methylthiophen-2-yl) pyrene (MTP) monomer was successfully synthesized via coupling reaction firstly. Then, a new conjugated copolymer based on 1-(3-methylthiophen-2-yl) pyrene (MTP) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) was electrochemically synthesized and characterized subsequently. Characterizations of the copolymer P(MTP-co-EDOT) were carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV-vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is found that P(MTP-co-EDOT) film has distinct electrochromic properties compared to the MTP and the EDOT homopolymers, and it exhibits four different colors (purple, brown, grass green and dusty blue) under various potentials. Moreover, the copolymer film shows high optical contrasts and satisfactory response times.
