Abstract:
A new method for assessing rock 's drillabity for PDC bits via a scratch testing was proposed in coupling with the rock breaking mechanisms using micro PDC bits and scratch blades. In this study, a large numbers of micro PDC bit drilling and scratch testing experiments were conducted in order to establish the correlation of the crushing work ratio between the two types of rock breaking processes, and a new rock 's drillability model for PDC bits was established based on the crushing work ratio of the rock scratch test. The new method can provide precise assessments of rock 's drillability for PDC bits and is in consistency with the micro PDC bit testing. The scratch testing not only can capture the effects of intrinsic heterogeneity of rocks on drillability, but also can keep the integrity of the rock cores.
